WMS invites families to join us for DATA & DOUGHNUTS.

--Learn more about WMS in our annual Title 1 parent meeting
--Gain insights about your child’s progress so far this year
--Establish attainable goals for success with your child
 
For safety purposes, please arrive early that morning to sign-in and print your identification badge. (WCSD uses the Raptor identification system to help keep our schools safe. Processing IDs does take time, so you might want to visit our front office prior to the event to be entered into our system.)

Congratulations to the following students for winning Butler’s monthly Sportsmanship Awards. They have shown great sportsmanship characteristics for this month, including being prepared, sharing, and being gracious winners. For fourth grade, Camila Cervantes and Luke Forester were recognized. For fifth grade, Noor Ahmed and Ty Nguyen were recognized.

House competitions at the WISE Center are serious business, and it was Ramsey's House of Archer for the win!  But, everyone was able to share in the rewards when Live School paychecks were passed out to use at the school store.

Students in third grade learned the difference between making an inference and an observation.  Students were asked to observe as the teacher presented them with what appeared to be a candle.  Students continued to observe as their teacher lit the "candle" and blew it out.  Next, they were asked to share what was observed.  After sharing out their observations, third graders were completely surprised when their teacher took a big bite of the candle and ATE IT!  The “candle” turned out to be a mozzarella stick with a sliver of almond as the wick.  This was the perfect opportunity for teachers to discuss the difference between an inference and an observation.  They learned that observations are based on facts or evidence gathered using the five senses.  Inference is based on their own reasoning and speculation.

Teachers and support staff at Mossy Head School participated in professional development focused on supporting students. Topics covered include student close reading and text coding, MTSS process, Ron Clark’s Essential 55, and technology tools.  Submitted by Allie Blanton

WDE’s guidance counselor, Mrs. Dawn Barone, visited some first grade classrooms to read a book, We Don’t Eat Our Classmates. Throughout the story, she discussed the book with them and asked questions. Mrs. Barone reminded students to not only be their best academically but to also be the best, kindest friend that they can be!

Each day, Walton Middle School teachers intentionally design learning opportunities for students that align with the AVID WICOR philosophy--a model that guides students in comprehending concepts and articulating ideas at increasingly complex levels.  On Friday, August 23rd, Mrs. Alison Shoaf designed a math fluency bell ringer that required students to collaborate with each other.  Her students exhibited teamwork, supporting each other's learning through shared responsibility, shared ideas, and shared discussion.  Developmentally, middle school students thrive when given the opportunity to express their ideas with their peers.  In Mrs. Shoaf's class, like many others, the WICOR way is evident each and every day.

In seventh grade Civics classes across the state of Florida, students study the roles, rights, and responsibilities of United States citizens.  On Friday, August 23rd, students in Mrs. Katie Williams' and Ms. Regina Messer's classes interacted with their peers to enhance their content knowledge in a collaborative carousel activity. 

In small groups, students rotated around the room, like a carousel, to different scenario cards and had to closely and carefully read and determine whether the situation described is a citizen's "obligation" or "responsibility."  Students then had to provide a summary sentence of key ideas from the scenario and then list evidence to support their rationale.  The teachers guided students to look for key words and phrases, like "must," "everyone," "required," and "you can."  They also told them to ask themselves, "Is there a consequence described?"  (If not, then it is probably a responsibility.) 

This engaging activity built students' content knowledge through writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and inquiry (WICOR) tasks--a foundation of AVID-style learning at WMS.  It also helped equip students with fundamental knowledge about their roles and duties as United States citizens--knowledge that will prove beneficial to them for the rest of their lives.
