WCSD Continues to FLY Among Nation’s Best
All WCSD Traditional High Schools Rank Among Top 20% Nationally for Second Consecutive Year
The Walton County School District’s departure on FLIGHT 250 has begun with a clear path To Heights Unseen. Every WCSD traditional high school has once again earned its place among the top 20% of high schools in the nation according to the newly released 2026–2027 U.S. News & World Report Best High Schools rankings.
For the second consecutive year, Magnet Innovation Center, South Walton High School, Freeport High School and Walton High School have each earned national recognition from U.S. News, an accomplishment that reflects a cohesive commitment to excellence from students, teachers, and staff across Walton County.
“This recognition belongs to all of Walton County,” Superintendent A. Russell Hughes said. “Our schools may serve different communities, and our students may choose different paths, but we share one vision and one responsibility: to prepare not just the whole child, but every child, for a life of success. When an entire District is moving together with that purpose, the heights we can reach are Heights Unseen.”
That shared purpose has been central to WCSD’s continued success.
Strong instructional practices and high academic expectations begin in the earliest grades and build throughout a student’s journey in Walton County schools. By the time students reach high school, those foundations are joined by opportunities that extend far beyond the traditional classroom. Students can challenge themselves through a tapestry of rigorous academic opportunities, robust Career and Technical Education programs, innovative visual and performing arts programs, athletics, clubs, and more.
Because U.S. News & World Report evaluates the high school grades of eligible public schools without creating a separate category for K–12 schools, its Best High Schools rankings do not fully reflect Paxton School’s unique K–12 model. In Florida’s accountability system, where Paxton can be considered alongside comparable K–12 schools, Paxton School is ranked #2 among K–12 schools in the State of Florida.
Nestled just beneath the Alabama state line, Paxton School has consistently stood among Florida’s highest-performing K–12 schools — a proud home of the Bobcats and a beacon of excellence in North Walton County, where generations of students have demonstrated that EPIC cannot be defined by geography.
