Writing Terminology

                   Welcome

In this ever-changing world, literacy has become everyone’s business.  In education, the responsibility of ensuring that all students are indeed literate extends across all academic areas, from language arts to mathematics to career/technical studies.  Undoubtedly, all individuals need good reading skills for enhancing not only vocabulary and sentence development but also idea formation.  However, literacy does not simply stop at reading, but instead continues into writing as well.  To ensure achievement in both the educational and business worlds, a person must be able to write coherently to effectively communicate with other individuals.  In addition, writing also serves as a vital tool for success because it broadens one’s perspective, improving the ability to process and deliver information.  Thus, literacy itself serves as a key, possessing the power to unlock individual gateways toward self-discovery through personal reflection and the sharing of hopes, dreams, and ideas.

Realizing how fundamentally literacy affects learning and thus life, we share a common goal of graduating competent readers and writers into the awaiting world of work and other post-secondary pursuits.  In addition to typical classroom and school assessments, one measure of such success is the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT), which examines students’ abilities to read, process, and communicate a variety of forms of information.  To this end, the 6th-12th Grade Literacy Handbook will become a valuable tool for students, parents, and teachers alike for strengthening reading and writing skills and, in turn, improving overall success.
