K-12 Reading Education

Walton County School District has placed a high priority on ensuring the provision of a quality literacy program. We great pride in the accomplishments of our students and realize that it takes the joint efforts of the students, parents, teachers, administrators, support staff, and the support of our communities to bring about the positive outcomes that we enjoy.

Each year the district writes a K-12 Comprehensive Research-Based Reading Plan which is submitted to the Just Read, Florida Office at the Florida Department of Education. Once approved, the plan is disseminated to principals at the beginning of each year. The plan must ensure the provision of:

  • highly qualified reading coaches,
  • professional development for school district teachers in scientifically based reading instruction, including strategies to teach reading in content areas and with an emphasis on technical and informational text,
  • summer reading camps for students who score at Level 1 on FCAT reading,
  • supplemental instructional materials that are grounded in scientifically based reading research and,
  • intensive interventions for middle and high school students reading below grade level.
