Walton County School District offers pre-kindergarten at many of our elementary schools. Pre-kindergarten consists of two types of programs for children ages three and four: Pre-Kindergarten Disabilities and Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten.

The Pre-Kindergarten (PreK) Disabilities program provides services for children who have a sensory, physical, mental or emotional condition which significantly affects their attainment of normal developmental milestones.  The Pre-K Disabilities classrooms are structured to provide a hands-on, play-centered learning environment which allows for developmentally appropriate activities.  ESE support personnel provide related services in accordance with each student's Individual Education Plan (IEP).

The Voluntary Pre-K program serves students who are four (4) years of age with birthdays between February 2 - September 1 of the school year for which they are enrolling or postpone it to the next year. Four-year-olds with birthdays from September 2 through February 1 are eligible to enrroll in VPK the following program year. The VPK classrooms utilize a curriculum that emphasizes active learning, focusing on the social, emotional, physical and cognitive development of each child.  Lesson plans and activities are correlated to the Florida Early Learning and Developmental Standards for 4 year olds.  The program also offers a strong literacy component which promotes early literacy and emergent reading skills.

VPK and Pre-K Disabilities classrooms follow the inclusion model, therefore children with disabilities work alongside their nondisabled peers.  This provides a wonderful opportunity for all children to gain academic and social skills from each other in a developmentally appropriate setting.
