Today new technologies, new curricula, more information, shrinking budgets, and a broader perspective on the global community have caused a change in thinking toward library media centers. The users have expanded beyond the community and the information to which they must have access is growing daily. Thus, the role of the library media center is continually evolving. The emphasis is no longer to preserve the collection but to provide access to all information wherever it is located and in whatever format it may be.
Knowing how to locate, evaluate, and communicate whatever information is needed is the real power. Students have empowerment through information to shape their own learning experiences and to face the challenges of tomorrow. Florida’s school reform, Blueprint 2000, reflects this need. Standard 1 refers to locating and applying information from various sources. Blueprint 2000 also states that "availability and appropriate use of technology are keys to the success" of schools. The library media mission statement found in Information Power: Guidelines for School Library Media Programs, (1988) ensures the effective use of ideas and information.
